Original advertising poster created around 1950 by Alain Bourdier for Productions René Médeville, winegrower in Cadillac, Gironde.
Against a deep blue background, Alain Bourdier humorously depicts an imposing wine taster holding his glass up to the light, carefully examining the colour and clarity of the wine. His deliberately simplified and almost caricatural silhouette, rendered in large flat areas of green, blue, red and yellow, gives the poster a strong and highly distinctive graphic presence.
The composition highlights the “Fruité” character of the wines, as well as the full range offered, from sweet to dry, while five stylised bottle shapes identify the different estates of the house: Gilette, Les Justices, Jourdan, Les Remparts and Lamothe.
The poster perfectly reflects the renewal of French advertising design in the post-war period. Its geometric forms, bold colours, economical drawing and humorous character belong to the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic, while still retaining some of the visual heritage of Art Deco.
The typography, elegant and carefully integrated into the composition, contrasts with the friendly character of the wine taster and gives the poster an immediately recognisable visual identity.
Printed in Paris by Frazier-Soye, this poster is a charming testimony to the great tradition of French wine advertising and to the vineyards of the Bordeaux region.
A particularly decorative poster for collectors of wine advertising, Bordeaux wines, French gastronomy posters and 1950s graphic design.
