History Hippolyte Le Bas

Louis Hippolyte Le Bas or Hippolyte Lebas was a French architect, professor of history and art theory, born in Paris on March 31, 1782 and died in the same city on June 12, 1867. A member of the Institut de France, he was also one of the ancestors of the Halévy family.

Unlike his uncle and cousin, Hippolyte did not obtain the first Grand Prix de Rome for architecture, only the second. He was therefore not normally entitled to a stay at the state's expense in the Eternal City.

However, he managed to go there three times, and even to the Villa Medici!

The first time was during his military service in 1803. He was able to join Murat's guard squadron, which even granted him the right to draw the monuments he would see.

The second time was when he only won the second Grand Prix de Rome, in 1806. He obtained from the Institute the favor of staying at the Villa Medici, but without the title of boarder.

He worked there alongside the architect Pierre-Adrien Pâris, who directed it, on surveys of ancient remains and more recent monuments.

He returned there again in 1811 with his friend François Debret for a vast study on a Renaissance architect, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, which was published from 1815.

He won the competition organized in 1823 for the construction of the Notre-Dame de Lorette church in Paris. See Photo

His style is in line with that which prevailed under the Empire, it is neoclassical. Thus, Notre-Dame de Lorette is inspired by the early Christian churches of Rome that he studied during his second trip to Italy at the Villa Medici in Rome.
