Champagne Vicomte de Castellane – Épernay is a vintage French poster created by Leonetto Cappiello in 1922 for the Champagne house Vicomte de Castellane. It belongs to the elegant and festive world of early 20th-century Champagne advertising, at a time when illustrated posters became an essential medium for establishing the image of major brands.
The composition features a theatrical figure dressed in a red and white costume, proudly holding a bottle of Champagne. His outfit echoes the colours and diagonal lines of the label, where the famous Saint Andrew’s Cross appears, the distinctive emblem of the Castellane house. Against a very sober dark blue background, the figure stands out powerfully and immediately catches the eye, in a spirit that is both refined, joyful and spectacular.
Cappiello transforms the brand into a true advertising character. The vicomte becomes a figure of celebration, elegance and distinction, perfectly suited to the image of Champagne. The large light-coloured lettering at the top, the expressive pose of the character and the strong colour contrasts give the whole composition great readability and a strong decorative presence.
Both a Champagne poster, a brand image and an emblematic composition in Cappiello’s style, Champagne Vicomte de Castellane – Épernay is a fine example of 1920s French advertising design, refined, theatrical and historically evocative.
