The Artist

The artist is generally cataloged as J. Stall or Joseph Stall (born 1874, died 1933), and is sometimes identified as André Lapuszewski, known as Stall.

His style closely resembles the Cappiello school of advertising: a bold, solid-colored background, an exuberant figure, a monumental product, and an instantly readable image. Here, the woman transforms into a living cluster of grapes—a joyful allegory for Champagne.

Subject and Composition

The poster depicts a smiling woman dressed in a large cluster of golden grapes, holding a bottle of Joseph Perrier Champagne. The deep blue background makes the red lettering and golden-yellow grapes stand out strikingly. It is a quintessential Art Deco advertising poster: minimal background detail, a spectacular figure, and highly visible branding.

The concept is simple yet effective:
the woman represents celebration, grapes, joy, and abundance; the bottle represents the product elevated to heroic status.

This is not a realistic scene of the grape harvest. It is an image of celebration—almost reminiscent of a music hall performance—designed to catch the eye on the street or inside an establishment.

The Joseph Perrier House

The Joseph Perrier House is a Champagne producer founded in Châlons-en-Champagne in 1825. The company’s official website notes its six-generation connection to its local terroir and historic cellars.

The poster thus belongs to the tradition of advertising by major Champagne houses during the interwar period—an era when brands sought to create imagery that was bold, elegant, festive, and instantly recognizable.
