Automobile Mascot – Saint Christopher
Duchess of Uzès (Anne de Rochechouart de Mortemart)
Circa 1910
Silvered bronze depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child, conceived as an automobile mascot at the dawn of the automotive era.
This rare work is signed and designed by the Duchess of Uzès, a pioneer of motoring in France and the first woman to obtain a driving licence. Saint Christopher, protector of travellers, embodies here the spiritual and protective symbolism associated with the earliest long-distance automobile journeys.
An art enthusiast and amateur sculptor, the Duchess of Uzès is known to have created symbolic objects related to automobiles, hunting, and travel, reflecting her modern and visionary outlook.
The base bears the handwritten inscription
“Duchesse d’Uzès née de Mortemart – St Christophe”
together with the number “90”, suggesting a restricted edition or a confidential production.
A work of great expressive power, at the crossroads of Symbolist sculpture and early automotive history, this mascot represents an exceptional collector’s piece.
Condition: original patina, early silvering
