SATO – Egyptian Cigarettes is a Swiss advertising poster created in 1919 by Charles Loupot during his Lausanne period. It belongs to the artist’s early body of work, before his move to Paris and his later recognition as one of the masters of modern poster design.
Printed as a colour lithograph, the composition already reveals Loupot’s distinctive style: elegant linework, bold areas of colour, a stylised female figure, and carefully designed typography. The image shows a woman seated on a cushion, dressed in a flowing blue gown, smoking a cigarette in an orientalist atmosphere.
At the beginning of the 20th century, so-called “Egyptian” cigarette brands often used Eastern imagery to suggest luxury, refinement, and exoticism. Loupot transforms this popular advertising theme into a highly graphic and modern image, positioned between late Art Nouveau and the emerging Art Deco style.
The poster was printed in Vevey by Säuberlin & Pfeiffer, an important Swiss lithographic printing house. Rare and sought after today, this poster is a fine example of early Swiss advertising design and an attractive piece for collectors of vintage posters, tobacco advertising, and works by Charles Loupot.
