Pierre Bonnard — Salon des Cent, 1896
Original poster for the 23rd General Exhibition of the Salon des Cent, Paris
This elegant original poster was created in 1896 by Pierre Bonnard to announce the 23rd General Exhibition of the Salon des Cent, held in Paris at the headquarters of the magazine La Plume, 31 rue Bonaparte, from August to September 1896. Printed by the prestigious Imprimerie Chaix, Chéret’s workshop, it belongs to the great artistic posters of the Belle Époque and reflects the rise of the poster as a true work of art.
A member of the Nabis group, Bonnard brought a highly modern vision to poster design: a simple, fluid, almost elliptical composition, where the elegance of the line replaces any excessive decorative effect. The young Parisian woman, her hat, her stylized silhouette and the presence of the small dog form a subtle scene of urban life.
The Salon des Cent, founded around the magazine La Plume by Léon Deschamps, was one of the major places for the promotion of prints and artistic posters in the 1890s. Each exhibition was announced by a poster entrusted to an important artist. Bonnard thus joined a prestigious series alongside Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Grasset, Ibels and Georges de Feure. The Salon des Cent played an important role in the recognition of the poster as a modern art form, accessible to both collectors and art lovers.
Today, this poster by Bonnard is held in several major public collections, including the MoMA, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Through its economy of means, its lively drawing and its typography integrated into the image, this poster already announces a very modern conception of graphic design. It is one of Bonnard’s important achievements in the field of prints and poster art, alongside his major lithographs of the 1890s.
