Original poster project for Rolex Submariner, 1959
Oil on panel, 200 × 140 cm

An exceptional and unique piece in the history of Swiss watch advertising, this original large-format oil paintingrepresents one of the earliest poster designs ever created for the Rolex Submariner, the legendary diving watch introduced in 1953.

The Rolex Models Depicted in This Poster Project: References 5510 and 5512

Signed by Swiss graphic artist Michel Péclard, a leading figure of post-war Swiss design, this work served as the prototype for the famous printed poster produced by Haefeli & Co., La Chaux-de-Fonds, now extremely rare.

Set against a deep ocean-blue background, a stylized red fish surrounds the watch — a bold, symbolic depiction of its promise of waterproofness, reinforced by the slogan:

“Guaranteed waterproof to 200 m of depth.”

This avant-garde composition perfectly captures the spirit of the Swiss International Style, combining minimalist geometry with expressive color and technical precision.
It stands as a seminal example of how Swiss graphic design fused art, industry, and innovation, reflecting the aesthetic and technological ambitions of Rolex at the dawn of modern luxury advertising.

A museum-quality masterpiece, and the only known original maquette for the iconic Submariner poster — a landmark in the visual history of both Swiss design and Rolex communication.

History of the Submariner and Its Worldwide Success

Sean Connery – the “James Bond” Icon

Period: Filming and release of Dr. No (1962), although the watch he wears on screen is actually a Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538, dating from 1958–1959.

Model: Submariner “Big Crown” Ref. 6538, featuring a gilt dial and a red-triangle bezel insert.

Distinctive Feature: Connery did not wear the watch on a steel bracelet but on a black-and-grey military-style NATO strap.

His watch became the most famous Submariner in the world, often referred to as the “James Bond Submariner.”
