Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – French Line
France II Ocean Liner – Antique Advertising Panel
Rare antique advertising panel produced for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, internationally known as the French Line, depicting the famous ocean liner France, now commonly referred to as France II in order to distinguish it from the later liner placed into service in 1962.
The scene shows the vessel sailing near a Havre harbour, surrounded by tugboats and smaller craft. Its monumental silhouette is immediately recognisable by its four funnels, an exceptional feature that made it the only major French ocean liner built with this configuration.
Constructed at Saint-Nazaire and placed into service in 1912, France II primarily operated on the prestigious route between Le Havre and New York. Designed as a showcase of French luxury and craftsmanship, the liner was celebrated for its richly decorated interiors, inspired by the great historical styles of France. Its extraordinary splendour earned it the nickname “The Versailles of the Seas.”
During the First World War, the vessel was requisitioned and used as a troop transport and later as a hospital ship. After the war, it returned to commercial transatlantic service before being withdrawn in the early 1930s and dismantled in 1934.
The polychrome image is executed on a metal support, most likely printed sheet metal with lithography details. It is presented in its original embossed metal frame, decorated with a painted imitation wood finish. A central plaque bears the inscription: “Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – French Line.”
This type of decorative advertising panel was probably intended for display in a shipping agency, travel office, hotel or ticket office. Combining maritime history, advertising design and the golden age of transatlantic travel, this rare object is a particularly decorative and desirable collector’s piece for enthusiasts of ocean liners and French Line memorabilia.
