Approximate format: approx. 24 × 18 cm folded / approx. 36 to 36.5 cm opened, depending on the examples.
Proofs in chromatic variants: green, olive, bistre and sanguine tones.
This rare group of three trial proofs illustrates the preparatory work carried out by the Maison Stern for the prestigious menu-programme of the Official Banquet of the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, after a composition by Alphonse Mucha. The Mucha Foundation identifies the original drawing as a design for the menu of the Official Banquet of the 1900 Paris Exposition, depicting an elegant woman adorned with jewellery in Mucha’s characteristic style. The original drawing is dated 1900 and recorded as executed in graphite, gouache and wash on grey paper, measuring 62 × 49 cm.
The composition unfolds across a double page: on the right, a large seated female figure, a refined embodiment of the Parisienne of 1900, dressed in a sumptuous gown and richly adorned with jewellery; in the background appear the silhouettes of the capital and the monumental symbols of the Exposition. In the foreground, the emblem “1900” anchors the composition in the event itself. On the left, a large blank panel was intended to receive the printed text of the menu, programme, or official reception.
These three examples are distinguished by their differences in tone and inking: two variants in green / olive monochrome, and one warmer variant in orange-bistre tones. They should be understood as workshop proofs, or trial proofs before letters, intended to determine the balance of colours, the density of the printing, and the overall decorative effect before the final impression. The absence of text in the left-hand panel further reinforces their preparatory character.
The importance of this group lies precisely in its creative and technical dimension: it is not merely a commemorative document of the Exposition Universelle, but a rare testimony to the printing process of an official prestige document, entrusted to one of the great Parisian houses of luxury engraving and printing.
Historical Context: Paris 1900 and Mucha
The 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle et Internationale was one of the major world events of the Belle Époque. It was held from 15 April to 12 November 1900 and celebrated both the achievements of the nineteenth century and the promises of the new century.
Mucha, already famous in Paris for his posters, decorative panels and Art Nouveau visual language, was associated with several projects linked to the 1900 Exposition. This composition for the official banquet belongs to a particularly fertile period in his career, when his style came to embody the elegance, modernity and decorative refinement of Paris around 1900.
The female figure represented here is not simply a fashionable illustration: she functions as an allegory of the capital and of its international radiance. Through her pose, jewellery, costume and architectural surroundings, she summarises the spirit of an official, festive and modern France, designed to impress the guests attending the ceremonies of the Exposition.
Stern, Engraver-Printer, Passage des Panoramas
The mention “STERN, gr.” visible at the bottom of the composition refers to the Maison Stern, the celebrated Parisian engraver-printer established in the Passage des Panoramas. Sources sometimes give 1834 or 1836 as the founding date of the house: the present Boisnard & Stern website mentions the creation of Stern Graveur in 1836, while the history of the premises recalls the opening of the engraving workshop at 47 Passage des Panoramas by Moïse Stern and Anselme Aumoitte in the 1830s.
Located in the heart of the Grands Boulevards district, close to the Palais Brongniart, the Hôtel Drouot and the fashionable quarters of Parisian society, Stern established itself as a leading house for luxury printed works: invitation cards, official menus, visiting cards, armorial stationery, diplomatic documents and institutional commissions. The Stern Ristorante website, which today occupies the former premises, recalls that the house counted among its clientele the Élysée Palace, embassies, families of the international aristocracy and major French and foreign companies.
The Passage des Panoramas itself was remodelled and extended in 1834, with the creation of several adjoining galleries, including the Galeries des Variétés, Feydeau, Saint-Marc and Montmartre. The former decorative interiors of the Stern shop, at 47 Passage des Panoramas, were listed as Historic Monuments in 2009.
This context explains the choice of Stern for an official document of the Exposition Universelle: the house possessed the expertise, clientele and prestige required to produce menus and programmes intended for the most important ceremonies of the Republic and of Parisian high society.
Note on Rarity
The official menus printed for the banquets of the 1900 Exposition Universelle are already sought-after documents. Trial proofs, however, are far rarer: they were not intended for public circulation, but for the workshop, for colour control and for the approval of the final printing. The gathering of three different chromatic states therefore constitutes an exceptional ensemble, allowing us to follow the stages in the development of a Mucha image before its final impression.
These proofs bear witness to the meeting of three major elements of the Belle Époque: Mucha, the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, and the great Parisian tradition of luxury printing embodied by Stern, Passage des Panoramas.
