N (for Fabrique Nationale) is a Belgian arms factory that also became known for producing motorcycles, which were sold under the name BAM in Germany in the 1930s.
The company’s official name was Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre SA, Herstal. Motorcycles were produced there from 1901 to 1959.
History
FN was founded in 1889. In 1898, a shaft-driven bicycle was developed and built, and in 1900, a car, made mainly of wood, was produced. Trials had already been carried out in 1896 with tricycles similar to the De Dion-Bouton, powered by a petroleum engine.
FN Motorcycles
In 1901, the first motorcycle appeared: “the donkey” (L’Âne). In fact, the regional representative for FN bicycles, Joseph Houard, ordered 100 motorized bicycles. He had himself taken the initiative of fitting a French engine into an FN bicycle frame. The company initially built 133 cc, 1¼ hp four-stroke engines with an automatic inlet valve, designed by the automobile manufacturer De Cosmo and developed in 1904. This first motorcycle was nicknamed “L’Âne” (“The Donkey”).
Single-cylinder models of 188, 225, and 286 cc were built after that, but FN soon became known for its four-cylinder engines. The first mass-produced four-cylinder model was the FN 362 cc, designed by engineer Clarus, Paul Kelecom, and draftsman Edmond Couturier in 1905.
