Original poster created in 1895 by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) for La Revue Blanche, one of the most influential literary and artistic journals of the Parisian avant-garde.

The poster depicts Misia Natanson, wife of Thadée Natanson, one of the founders of La Revue Blanche, and a celebrated muse of the artistic and literary circles of late 19th-century Paris. Lautrec portrays her as an elegant and fashionable Parisienne, wrapped in a fur stole and wearing a spectacular black hat, her silhouette dominating the composition with extraordinary presence.

The bold simplification of forms, flattened perspective and restricted palette of black, grey, green and vivid red reveal the strong influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which played an essential role in Toulouse-Lautrec’s graphic language. The asymmetrical composition and integration of typography into the image give the poster a strikingly modern appearance.

Created at the height of the Belle Époque, La Revue Blanche perfectly captures the intellectual sophistication and fashionable atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Paris. Through his distinctive line and remarkable economy of colour, Toulouse-Lautrec transformed a promotional poster into one of the most iconic images of French graphic art.

Today, La Revue Blanche is considered one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s great poster masterpieces and an important work in the history of Art Nouveau, Japonism and modern advertising design.

A highly desirable poster for collectors of Toulouse-Lautrec, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, Japonism and French poster art.
