ITALIAN LINE
Original Italian Travel Poster – c. 1930s
Striking original travel poster created for the Italian Line, one of the great names in twentieth-century transatlantic passenger travel.
The composition is remarkable for its bold modernist simplicity. Two ocean liners are shown crossing the Atlantic between Europe and the Americas, viewed from high above a stylized globe. The sweeping curve of the Earth, rendered in rich green and yellow tones, gives the image a powerful sense of movement, distance and international travel.
The two ships, reduced to elegant streamlined forms, appear almost to glide across the ocean. Their position between the European and American continents immediately evokes the great transatlantic routes that connected Italy with North and South America.
The poster is signed “Cenni” in the upper left corner. Its refined graphic treatment, simplified geography and dramatic perspective are characteristic of the sophisticated Italian travel advertising of the interwar period.
A highly decorative image combining Art Deco influence, modernist graphic design and the golden age of ocean-liner travel.
An important and visually powerful poster for collectors of Italian Line, ocean liners, maritime history, travel advertising and Italian graphic design.
