Huelva is a city located in the extreme southwest of Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is the capital of a province that bears its name. To the east, 90 kilometers, is the city of Seville, to the west, 50 kilometers, the border of Portugal, to the south, the Atlantic Ocean. As the capital of the province, Huelva is home to the main public service structures at regional and national level.

It was from a nearby village, Palos de la Frontera, that Christopher Columbus embarked on his first voyage to what he thought was the Indies. The city has a great sympathy for this continent because of its involvement in the discovery of the Americas.
