This poster announces the preliminary test weekend for the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, held on April 17 and 18, 1971. The prominent text specifies:
April 18, 1971 — a major first — The 3 Hours of Le Mans.”

The phrase “a major first” is not merely decorative; it refers to the staging of a supporting race during the test days. Historical records from the ACO confirm the inclusion of the “3 Hours of Le Mans” race—held alongside the test sessions—in 1971, won by Claude Ballot-Léna and Guy Chasseuil in a Porsche 908-2.

The sporting context is significant: the April 1971 tests were particularly notable. The official 24 Hours of Le Mans website notes that the April 1971 preliminary tests were dominated by the performance of the Porsche 917; on April 18, Jackie Oliver clocked a lap time of 3:13.6, averaging over 250 km/h.

The composition is highly characteristic of early 1970s automotive graphic design: simplified shapes, head-on views of the cars, flat areas of color, frontal perspective, and a prominent sponsor logo.

The three cars bear the numbers 1, 2, and 3, playing on both the concept of race rankings and the title “3 Hours of Le Mans.” The large yellow “3” at the bottom of the image serves as a race logo. The Esso sponsor logo appears in the center, accompanied by a checkered flag and the word “Challenge.”

The poster does not aim to realistically depict a specific race scene. It markets, rather, the concept of a new, fast-paced, modern, and spectacular event, organized around the world of Le Mans prototypes and testing.
