Édouard and Caroline are preparing for a social evening organized by the latter's family and during which Édouard, pianist, is to give a concert.

But he doesn't have a tuxedo waistcoat and has to borrow one from his wife's cousin. Meanwhile, Caroline decides to cut her dress to bring it up to date, which her husband will blame her on his return.
