Géo Ham was a historiographer of aeronautical and automobile competitions between the Wars and up to the 1960s. His talent was informed by a comprehensive knowledge of the subject since he took part in the great aerial Events, the epic airmail service, and was a navigator for talented rally drivers.
At first influenced by Montaut and then by Gordon Grosby, Géo Ham freed himself from them and established a personal style that was less anecdotal and more synthetic and borrowed from the theatre and neo-classical drama.
In this portrait, presumed to be inspired by Robert Benoist, Géo Ham sculpts as much as paints the archetypal modern centaur, courageous and tenacious, the masculine counterpart of the Self-portrait at the wheel by Tamara de Lempicka. Man and machine are one and are melded in a monochrome blue whilst the background red accentuates the dramatisation of the scene
