Bullitt is a 1968 American film directed by Peter Yates. It stars Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, and Jacqueline Bisset. It is an adaptation of the novel Mute Witness by Robert L. Fish.
The film follows Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco police lieutenant, who is assigned by an ambitious politician, Walter Chalmers, to protect Johnny Ross, a gangster whose testimony is crucial in a trial involving that political figure. Despite the precautions taken by Bullitt and his men, Ross is seriously wounded and later dies in his hospital bed from his injuries. Bullitt then launches an investigation to track down the killers.
Released by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts on October 17, 1968, Bullitt was both a critical and commercial success. In 1969, it won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, awarded to Frank P. Keller, and also received a nomination for Best Sound. That same year, screenwriters Trustman and Kleiner won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay, presented by the Mystery Writers of America.
Bullitt is especially famous for its car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, which later became one of the most influential scenes in the history of cinema.
