UNIQUE shipowner model

The paquebot Asia in wood and metal built for the combined shippers shipping company. The hull is yellow and red lacquered for dead works and green lacquered for live works. The central castle with the wheelhouse which overhangs it and two chimneys bearing the five red stars on a white background of the company flag, symbolizing the five continents and the universal dimension of the covered maritime routes. The mizzenmast and derrick carry the yards and the boom for a gaffed mainsail.

The metal fittings, the bridges and forecastle forwards and backwards, are very complete. Many rowboats in position on their davits. Gold and red lacquered windsocks. Double helix with four blades. Rests on three turned wooden legs.
Presentation table. A wrought iron display case can be given to the purchaser.

Overall dimensions 307 x 114 x 59 cm

Shipowner models are traditionally considered to be the top of the range of the ship model. Tradition has it that at the launch of each boat of any importance, the owner had a model of the boat built in 3 copies by a specialized model maker ... which cost a fortune.
The first copy remained in a display case in the owner's office. The second copy was given to the captain in charge of the ship. The third copy was offered to the godmother who threw the bottle on the hull.

These shipowner models were good promotional tools for institutional partners (bankers, shareholders, partners such as tourism or transport operators), but also for customers who frequented commercial premises.
The workmanship was often of very high quality: a faithful replica of the boat as it left the yards, exceptional attention to detail and the use of very beautiful materials. When the boat underwent major alterations or changed owners, a new model could be produced.

The Chargers Reunited Navigation Company was founded in 1872 in Le Havre by the Parisian banker Jules Vignal
Its steamships provide regular connections with Brazil and Argentina
The flagships are among others the City of Bahia, the City of Santos, the City of Janeiro

The company also provides maritime service to the West African coast, in particular with the vessel Chad which leaves from Bordeaux.
Passed under the fold of the company Fabre et Cie in 1927, the company tries to buy Aéropostale in 1933 and confirms its desire to invest in air transport by founding the Aéromaritime.

In 1939, its fleet was made up of five banana ships, 25 freighters and 14 liners, two of which were mixed; among which Asia.
February 12, 1914 took place in Dunkirk, the launch of the liner Asia built by the "Chantiers de France" for the Cie des Chargeurs Réunis.

The operation was carried out with complete success. This magnificent steamer is intended for the new three-week service between France and the West Coast of Africa, recently inaugurated by Chargeurs Réunis.
The luxury and comfort of its facilities were taken to a degree that had not yet been achieved on the steamers, both French and foreign, assigned to the parallel lines. Very happy innovations have been carried out in all the fittings.

The main features are as follows:
Length, 140 m. ; width, 17 m. ; hollow, 12 meters; 9,058 t; 7,500 hp; 139.10 x 17.06 m; 2 fireplaces; 2 propellers; 2 triple expansion machines; 7 cylindrical boilers stamped at 14 kg / cm²; 16.4 knots; 159 1st class passengers; 80 2nd class passengers; 96 3rd class passengers; 8,561 grt; 5 160 pel
Its displacement is 12,000 tons, the power of the machine of 10,000 horsepower gives Asia a speed of 18 knots.
From 1916 to 1918 Asia was requisitioned as a hospital ship.
On 11.10.1919, the ship left Bordeaux for Brazil Plata then another in May 1920.

On 10.30.1920, the freighter ran aground at Bec d'Ambés on leaving the Gironde, following a damaged helm. She was refloated by 2 tugs.
On 12/14/1925, while setting sail from Dakar, she lost her starboard propeller in the chain of another ship and struck the quay, making a tear on the starboard aft above the waterline.
In April 1927, a fire in the load of wood and rubber broke out in hold number 1.

In 1942 it was seized by the Italians then in 1943 by the Germans in Marseille to be returned in April to the Italians and renamed ROSSANO.
On 05.10.1944, Asia was sunk by an Allied bombardment and capsized in the port of Genoa.
