At the end of the 1950s, two German jazz enthusiasts, Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, noticed that the European public was largely unaware of the blues. Only Big Bill Broonzy, then recently deceased (in 1958), was little known to the public, and the blues was only recognised as the source of jazz . They decided to create a travelling festival throughout Western Europe.
First festival (1962)

This first festival is touring in FRG, France, Switzerland, Austria and Great Britain. It passes through prestigious venues such as the Olympia in Paris or the Titania Palast in Berlin. It is often a consecration for these musicians who only knew the jazz "clubs" reserved for blacks in America.

In this first tour, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mc Ghee, Willie Dixon, Shakey Jake, Magic Sam, T-Bone Walker as well as singer Helen Humes will perform.
