Leonetto Cappiello — Contratto
Art Deco advertising poster — Contratto, 1922
A spectacular composition by Leonetto Cappiello, this poster for Contratto brilliantly illustrates the advertising genius of one of the great masters of the modern poster. Set against a deep black background, a female figure appears in a theatrical movement, holding above her an immense glass overflowing with foam. The contrast between the black background, the red drapery, the golden tones of the glass, and the pearly highlights gives the whole image an immediate visual power.
Created in 1922, this poster is a perfect example of Cappiello’s incomparable style: a simple, striking, memorable image designed to capture attention from a distance. The artist does not merely describe a product; he invents an almost mythical apparition, associating the Contratto brand with celebration, luxury, and effervescence.

Detailed description
This poster is a remarkable example of the Cappiello method: isolating an expressive figure against a dark background to create an image that is instantly legible and unforgettable. Here, the female character appears to literally carry the effervescence of the brand. The monumental glass, overflowing with white foam, becomes the central element of the composition and gives the image its full dynamism.
The red drapery, thrown like a flame, adds a dramatic and sensual note. The dark skirt, decorated with golden motifs, reinforces the precious character of the scene. The monumental CONTRATTO typography, in large pale letters, anchors the composition with strength and balance.
The poster thus combines three essential elements: movement, luxury, and visual memorability. Cappiello succeeds in transforming an advertisement for a beverage into a true graphic icon.
About Leonetto Cappiello
Leonetto Cappiello is one of the greatest poster artists of the early 20th century. Born in Livorno in 1875 and active mainly in Paris, he profoundly renewed advertising poster design through his sense of contrast, color, and visual synthesis. He is often regarded as one of the fathers of the modern poster.
Unlike the highly narrative posters of the late 19th century, Cappiello favored more direct compositions: one figure, one attitude, a frequently dark background, and a brand name that is immediately visible. This exceptionally effective formula brought him fame and had a lasting influence on the history of advertising.
