The Kandahar is a legendary event in alpine skiing. The competition was previously called Arlberg-Kandaher (AK). The name Arlberg comes from the name of an Austrian pass (region of Sankt Anton).
Kandahar originated from an English general Sir Roberts of Kandahar who occupied Kandahar in Afghanistan).
The latter was notably vice-president of the Public School Alpine Sports Club.
In 1928, Arnold Lunn teamed up with Hannes Schneider, the most famous Austrian skier of the time, to organize a new alpine competition;
The latter being from Arlberg, and Lunn insisting on keeping the name of his club, they baptized it Arlberg-Kandahar, also known by the acronym A-K, which combines downhill and slalom.
The first AK was contested in March 1928 in Sankt Anton.
Until the Second World War, the A-K alternated between Sankt Anton and Mürren, it was then organized in Chamonix (France), Sestriere (Italy), Garmisch (Germany) or Mont-Tremblant (Quebec)
