Beira is a historical province of Portugal, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Spain, on the north by the Portuguese provinces of Entre Douro e Minho, Tras-os-Montes, on the south by Alentejo and Portuguese Extremadura.

It was 240 kilometers by 135 and had a population of 1,200,000. Its capital was Coimbra. It was crossed by the Tagus, the Douro, the Vouga, the Mondego. It had important saltworks.

In 1936, following an administrative reform, Beira was divided into three provinces: Beira Alta, Beira Baixa and Beira Litoral.

In Portugal, as everywhere in the world, we were aware of the need to have a commercial network.

In fact, for several years an effort was made in this direction in the African colonies, where the domestic carriers DETA (Mozambique) and TAAG in Angola were already operating, companies that are currently the national carriers of these two African countries.

Beira is a port city of Mozambique and the capital of the province of Sofala. It is located on the left bank of the Pungue River, at its mouth in the Indian Ocean, 720 km northeast of Maputo.

In the Azores, SATA operated and, in the continental platform, there was since 1942 an airport open to international traffic, that of Portela de Sacavém in Lisbon. In 1944 the Pedras Rubras airport in Porto was also opened to traffic.
