After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, rebel forces had taken control of many newspapers, publishing houses and rotary presses belonging to those considered enemies. All these publications - as well as printing works, presses and radio stations - came under the control of the National Press Delegation.
With the formation of Franco's first government (January 1938), the National Press and Propaganda Delegation also became part of the State administration and was placed under the Ministry of the Interior, under the direction of Ramón Serrano Suñer. This meant the unification of the State Delegation for Press and Propaganda - a body created in January 1937-9 with the Delegation attached to the Falange - into a single entity. From that moment on, the Delegation had an efficient organization: it began to have a General Directorate of Propaganda, headed by Dionisio Ridruejo, and a General Directorate of the Press, headed by José Antonio Giménez-Arnau.
The Spanish Phalanx (in Spanish: Falange Española) is a Spanish nationalist political organization of fascist obedience founded on October 29, 1933 by José Antonio Primo de Rivera, son of Miguel Primo de Rivera, former dictator of Spain from 1923 to 1930.
The organisation takes its name from the military formations of ancient Greece and is inspired by Italian fascism1. The Spanish Phalanx and then the FET y de las JONS, resulting from the merger of the former with the JONS, played an important role in the civil war between 1936 and 1939 against the Republicans.
