An artist of the Belgian school, Fernand Toussaint painted marine scenes, figures, genre scenes, flowers, and primarily portraits. He travelled to Paris where Alfred Stevens encouraged him to paint portraits of feminine and psychologically charged women. A very prolific painter, he exhibited his Post-Impressionistic canvases in various cities throughout Europe, including Paris where he showed works with the "Salon des Artistes Francois". In 1901 he was awarded a third-place medal, followed by many others throughout the years including a gold medal from the Paris Salon in 1929.
