Théophile Poilpot is a French painter, engraver and poster designer renowned for his panoramas. Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, he studied with Jean-Léon Gérome and Gustave Boulanger. He presented works at the Salons between 1874 and 1878 as well as at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. In 1893, he was appointed official painter of the Navy.

He led a double life: artist and politician (mayor of Noisy le Grand) and had many friendships among which: Gambetta, Alphonse Allais, Alfred Jarry, Jules Chéret, Georges Courteline and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (whose daughter he married Jeanne) that he met regularly at his home in Noisy le Grand.

He made twenty panoramas which have practically all disappeared. Are still visible:
