The Orient-Express is a luxury train created by the International Sleeping Car Company (CIWL) which, since 1883, has provided a link between Paris, Vienna and, from 1919, Venice, and Constantinople (then Istanbul)1 , serving several capitals of European nations.

In the 1920s, with artist-decorators such as René Prou and René Lalique, the "Orient-Express" style reached its apogee. It was after several route changes, two wars and finally the continuous decline of its prestige during the Cold War, that the daily Direct-Orient-Express service to Istanbul and Athens ceased in 1977.

Convinced by its low commercial speed (barely 55 km/h towards the end) due to the interminable customs stops in the communist countries crossed, as well as the obsolete state of their networks, and mistreated by the growing competition from mass aviation.
